February 26th, 2011 - Mystical Reason

Location: Masonic Hall, 71 West 23rd Street, New York, NY 10010

Time: 2:00pm - 5:00pm

Matters of fact and matters of faith. Scientists and sorcerers. Religion and reason. Throughout the ages, these two forces have sometimes contended, sometimes cooperated, each trying in its own way to drive forward the human condition.

In his seminal book 'The Rose Cross and the Age of Reason', Dr. Christopher McIntosh examines the cross-pollination of the Enlightment and the mystical revival which took place in 18th Century Europe. Out of print for several years and fetching prices in excess of $1000 on the used book market, this much sought-after work is finally being reprinted by SUNY Press. To celebrate this event, we are fortunate indeed to welcome Dr. McIntosh, together with other noted speakers, for an afternoon of fascinating lectures on the intersection of magic and reason.

Dr. McIntosh rarely lectures in the USA so this is an event not to be missed.

Lecture Topics:

  • Dr. Christopher McIntosh - The Rose Cross and the Age of Reason
  • Steven Burkle - Alchemy and Magick Under the Three Globes and Other Contemporary Jurisdictions

After working in London in journalism and publishing he spent four years in New York as an information officer with the United Nations Development Programme, then moved to Germany to work for UNESCO. In parallel he has pursued a career as a writer and researcher specialising in the esoteric traditions. His books include The Astrologers and their Creed (1969); Eliphas Lévi and the French Occult Revival (1972); The Rosicrucians (latest edition 1997); The Rose Cross and the Age of Reason (1992), based on his D.Phil. dissertation; The Swan King: Ludwig II of Bavaria (latest edition 2003); and Gardens of the Gods (2005).
