"Imagination is more important than knowledge." Albert Einstein.
Welcome all to my blog. It is both an honor and privalege to have been asked post my thoughts and feelings on a subject very near and dear to me, Magick. I will use the spelling with a 'k' to remain consistant with the new convention of delineating between stage magic, illusionists and the 'miracle workers' and alchemists of a by-gone age (or not!).
From the dawn of our species, we have always had those that walked among us while being able to walk between the worlds. In times long since forgotten, we relied on the village shaman to aid us in our quest for the divine, and in our need for protection. He or she would help with fertility, both the propogation of our species, game, and eventually livestock and crops. They would perform 'miraculous' acts to rid our homes of unwanted 'spirits' and to communicate with loved ones who were with us in body no more. The average person had no time to deal with the techniques used by the shaman, they were too busy with basic survival. The 'witch' would pass on his/her knowledge to a willing and capable successor.
Time passes, man evolves (sort of!)..........villages spring from tribes as man begins to settle and change from his nomadic ways. Sacred sites were 'discovered' and the first of the Gods venerated, Father Sky and Earth Mother. Rituals are created to mark observations of what we now know as seasons, planetary movement, and change.
Higher powers are personified, Gods are named to aid in forming personal relationships with the forces of the universe, language invented to preserve knowledge for posterity. Our species begins to build permanent structures (if there is such a thing) towns, cities. Spiritual practices evolve, its not practical for the shaman to travel so far outside of the protection of city walls to perform rites and rituals. Sacred buildings called Temples are constructed. People still live and work in the forests outside of the city, a split occurs in sacred practices. Cities breed schools, writing, education. Farms breed hard work, early mornings, early nights, food.
Magickal practices evolve. The farmer venerates Mother earth. Cities now have New Gods. Both develope a system of using the energies granted by the Gods to effect Change in the world.
Magick for survival abounds in the fields and kitchens of simple folk. Magick abounds in the Temples for Priest/Mages.
Both are persecuted by monotheism. Practicioners once venerated for helping the common folk are persecuted in the name of the White God. The Dark Ages descend on Western Man.
Mankind emerges from the Dark ages with new ideas about himself and the universe. Science springs from Magickal practices. Science becomes the New Gods for a time.
Man begins to realize through his science that energy=energy. Where things are seen as solid, now they are said to be vibration. Atoms are not solid, subatomic particles.....quantum particles.....quarks.....flash in and out of existance. E=mc2.
Man accepts that the imagination is the gateway to the Soul (at least the 'common folk do).
The Soul is a form of energy
Energy is energy
E=mc2
Magick based religions are one of the fastest growing in the United States.
Magick is the process by which a person causes change in conformity with Will.
Men and women rediscover that they can worship, venerate and have a personal relationship with, a patron Deity.
Magick is a path for personal transformation. With it, we can access the Divine within us.
With practice, we can change our stars!
Imagine that!
- "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed." Einstein.
